Plotting a course

While at university, I took a chance and sneaked into the Royal Cape Yacht club to see if I could find a ride on a yacht. I had done some sailing previously as a scholar, but nothing worth mentioning. I found an old seafarer named Julian Ozinsky who invited me on his yacht "Redwing", and from that point on, my life was about to take a ride I would never have imagined possible!

In just a few months, I found a position on the Yacht "Spindrift" owned by Jeremy Flint and began to compete in the various regattas around the Cape. I joined the Royal Cape Yacht club and after a year or so, I was competing in some of the most competitive events on the South African yacht racing calendar.

But I wasn't satisfied with racing around the buoys in Table Bay: There was a large ocean out there to conquer; all I had to do was to find a way to get there!
