The beautiful game!

After years of planning and anticipation, the world cup soccer finals are finally here! Those who were lucky enough to get tickets have had a fabulous time going to the matches or Fanfest areas. The feeling in South Africa is wonderful, and a moment for us to feel proud that we are not the backward nation the world sometimes thinks of us when they read about the poor decisions of our leadership; nor our own opinions of ourselves for that matter…

For all of my life I have been a rugby and cricket follower predominantly: Those were the sports I played at school as a young boy, continued to support during my tertiary education  and have done so all the way up until today. I also enjoy watching other sports such as motor sports, some water sports, tennis and even volleyball, particularly if it’s the girls’ game on a beach somewhere in Brazil! But I’ve never really taken to soccer for some reason. I must be nakedly honest by saying that up until the world cup series, I’ve never known why.

Since my wife and I have got caught up in the gees (spirit) of the world cup soccer tournament,  we’ve just about watched every game we could. In fact, we’ve also got dressed up in the colours of the teams on the day and joined in the fun at the Grand Parade Fanfest which has been well-worth the effort! But it’s not brought me any closer to this thing they call “the beautiful game” unfortunately. If anything, it’s made me realise just why I’ve not ever been enthusiastic about it. I think it would be easy to say it has something to do with the vuvuzela drone, but that wouldn’t be it. Truth be told, I blow a mean vuvu myself – it’s a sort of involuntary thing which becomes quite natural when you hold one in your hands.  No, it has to do with the game itself or more precisely, the men <sic> who play the game. The way I see it, soccer players are those wannabe sportsmen who weren’t tough enough to make it as ballerinas! A more pathetic bunch of pansies will be hard to come by with all their cheap faking and cheating. What’s even worse is that these players are the best representatives their nations are able to find!

Now, I am an understanding, sensitive new-age type of guy, so I'm going to help you see the positive side of it. Here’s how: Since South Africa was eliminated in the first round of this tournament it at least means that we are not up there with the top-ranking world cup drama boys…

Viva Braaivleis, Rugby, Sunny skies and Chevrolet!
