Follow the hype

The hype of being seen to be progressive is working on my patience! There are those that walk amongst us who like to be seen as sensitive new-age types who prefer to bury their heads in the sand and ignore the realities of what is going on. On TV, the radio, the papers: there’s this element of “Ag Shame” we must think positively and it will all work out nicely…

We have a major global threat on our hands with oil pumping uncontrollably from the bottom of the sea into the Gulf of Mexico; the threat is not merely the methane which is escaping (making our greenhouse problem worse than ever), the very real threat it's posing to sea life and oxygen supply is more than our sensitivities wish to deal with. Instead we'll prefer to believe that it will be ok. If we ignore it, perhaps it will just go away.

There's more about this ignorance that is tragically used to better the image of the politically correct:  I know someone who truthfully believes he's a greenie because he purchases his groceries from Woolworths! Hard to believe I'm sure, but it's true! I see the hypers who live in apartments in Sea Point bleating on about the trend-setting green movement to which they subscribe! Can you imagine them digging through worm shit in their endeavours to shift to the greener side of life? And the lights! Better leave them on all night long whether we're there or not just in case the Nigerians consider moving in...   It’s nice to be seen to be part of the green movement – I guess its safe there too.

Now it's understandable that we have become caught up in the excitement of the soccer world cup; it's a very exciting event which is being played in our back yard. But there is something that our oblivious sector of the population are ignoring, and this is that we have some serious problems underlying all the fun and games taking place: Our president made it quite clear at the beginning of the events that we are all to behave ourselves for the duration of the World Cup. This meant that the politicians were to keep their mouths shut! What a pleasure this has been.. The result is that the country's morale has improved and race relations are better than they have been in a long time. If only it would stay this way - politicians doing their jobs at running the school system, building roads, policing the country and what-have-you...  and leaving their comments to themselves. But alas, that's not the way it goes, I'm afraid. So before we go about thinking that South Africa has become the make-believe paradise we would all be proud of being a part of, remember that Sepp Blatter and his leadership team will be handing this country back to the politicians once the fun and games are all over. Sad but true. But it's not going to win you any points on the politically correct meter if you tell it like it is...

So much of this hype for image goes on around us – I call them the plastically politically correct. Perhaps the rest are just plain stupid - but just dare you question them, it’s like questioning the existence of god itself!
